Claims that the past is simply a history of failures need to be treated with a proper degree of skepticism. The accumulated experiences of past experiments, successes and failures remain indispensable for understanding why Italy's North-South disparities have persisted. But the history - or better, the histories - of previous attempts to address these disparities and the reasons why they have repeatedly (but not always) failed to achieve their aims, serve also to reveal the complexities of the issues at stake.

L'idea che il passato sia solo una storia di fallimenti deve essere trattata con un adeguato grado di scetticismo. Le esperienze accumulate dei passati esperimenti, successi e fallimenti rimangono indispensabili per comprendere perché le disparità tra Nord e Sud in Italia sono persistite. Ma la storia - o meglio, le storie - dei precedenti tentativi di affrontare queste disparità, e le ragioni per cui hanno ripetutamente (ma non sempre) fallito nel raggiungere i loro obiettivi, servono anche a rivelare la complessità delle questioni in gioco.
